Late last year, San Antonio City Council heard an ambitious plan that would have added millions in tax revenue, tens of thousands of residents, and 66 square miles to the city by annexing five surrounding areas. It would have been the largest addition in 20 years.
The annexation efforts were unpopular in some of the proposed communities, and several measures were pushed at the legislative session to try and make the process more difficult for cities. These efforts ultimately failed, and many thought that San Antoniowas on the fast track to quick growth. Especially given the assumption that bills would again be filed at the Texas Statehouse come next session.
The city then proposed additional communitiesto annex and continued speeding up the process.
Last week, Mayor Ivy Taylor said shecouldn't supportthe speed at which things were going and called for a reevaluation of all annexation plans.
So where are we now?
