A new investigative piece from ProPublica is shining a light on the decision made by Chesapeake Energy to reinterpret their contracts with landowners to pay far less, sometimes as much as 90 percent less.
The piece, which you can find here, says the company was teetering on the edge of financial collapse and drove up the amount of money it was recouping from landowners to pass gas through the pipeline on their land all in an attempt to shore up billions of dollars and bring the company back from potential ruin. According to the piece, several state attorneys general have launched investigations with some winning at trial.
