Two weeks ago Texas Matters aired a special report on the 1910SlocumMassacre. It told the story of a murderous attack on an East Texas African American community and how Texas history has overlooked the event. But on Thursday the Texas Historic Commission unanimously voted to approve a historic marker for the Slocum Massacre over the objections of Anderson County officials.

Constance Hollie-Jawaid is a descendant of the survivors of the Slocum Massacre and filed the application for the historic marker. She called the marker approval the first step in finding justice for her slain family members. The marker is expected to be unveiled in the Fall.
