San Antonio is getting ultra-high speed internet access sooner than expected. AT&T will launch gigabit internet in the Alamo City next Monday. Customers using AT&T services will be given first access to internet speeds so fast you can download an entire movie in about 30 seconds.
AT&T calls it GigaPower, offering speeds up to 1000 megabits per second. Renee Flores, a VP with AT&T said it will be available to a significant population, mostly U-Verse customers on September 28th.
“Our U-verse network has been built so that it’s got additional capabilities so we’re building off of the fiber network that’s in existence already to make GigaPower available,” Flores said.
Google announced it was bringing its highly anticipated Fiber service last month, but gave no official launch date. Mayor Ivy Taylor welcomes the attention from Google and AT&T. “It says San Antonio is a great place to do business and that we’re on the cutting edge to innovation and technology,” she added.
David Heard, a cofounder of the citywide technology consortium known as TechBloc, agreed. “The investment AT&T is making in our community is just another step, another example, of our revolution in becoming a hub in high-tech job growth and technology long term,” Heard said.
San Antonio is one of 16 cities selected for GigaPower. The company hasn’t detailed prices yet nor where the first customers will be connected.
