According to San Antonio’s Metropolitan Health District, Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes, more specifically the Aedes Aegypti mosquito – which can be identified by its striped legs. It’s the female mosquito that bites and it’s active during the day.

Zika can also be transmitted sexually and from a pregnant mother to her baby in the womb. The Health District reports it is not known how often Zika is passed from mother to baby during pregnancy or at the time of birth.
