San Antonio and Bexar County are being proactive in the fight against the Zika virus.
Dr. Anil Mangla with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District addressed Bexar County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.
While Zika virus has not been found in any mosquitoes in Texas or any other state, he explained how it can start and spread.
“Somebody goes internationally, comes back to the United States and was bit internationally,” said Dr. Mangal. “What happens is our local mosquito is going to bite that individual and then that is going to be spread into the local mosquito.”
Zika virus can cause fever, rash, joint pain, and pink eye, but it can be fatal to the fetus of a pregnant woman.
City and county officials plan to begin spraying areas prone to mosquito breeding this spring.
