The board of trustees for the Edgewood Independent School District voted to formally censure fellow trustee Dina Serrano Monday for posting a photo online of her husband wearing a noose.

Trustees for the Edgewood Independent School District approved a budget for the upcoming school year Tuesday evening with a nearly $9 million shortfall.

The $104 million budget is $8.6 million higher than the district’s expected revenue.

The Edgewood school district wants to convert many of its neighborhood campuses to specialty schools over the next five years. Superintendent Eduardo Hernández introduced the plan Thursday during the district’s first State of the District presentation.

Starting next school year, the city’s preschool program will operate an early education center in the Edgewood Independent School District.

Five days into his new role as superintendent of Edgewood Independent School District, Eduardo Hernandez said he plans to spend the next 95 days listening, learning and asking three questions:

“What do we as a district need to continue to do? What do we as a district need to start doing? And what do we as a district need to stop doing?” said Hernandez, sitting in his new office on San Antonio’s west side.

School officials at the Edgewood Independent School District said positive changes are coming to the district, including more specialized programming to attract students and improve academic outcomes.

Like many districts in Bexar County, Edgewood said it is losing students to charter schools.

On October 2, 1989, the Texas Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state’s school finance system was unequal. The case was Edgewood ISD versus Kirby, pitting San Antonio’s Edgewood Independent School District against the state education commissioner at the time, William Kirby.
