Raising A Family Amidst The Turbulence Of War

StoryCorps
Kit Seddighzadeh (58) shares with her daughter, Fetaine Seddighzadeh (28), her experiences raising a family in Iran during the Iran and Iraq war in the 1980s.

“A soldier fights a war, but he doesn’t have his wife and kids with him,” says Kit Seddighzadeh about her experience living in Iran during a time of conflict. In the early 1980s, she had moved with her husband and two infant sons from the United States to Iran to be closer to her husband’s family. They had initially lived in Iran’s capital, Tehran, then relocated to family owned land close to the Iran-Iraq border, just as the war was reaching new heights of aggression.

She recalls the ever-present threat of Iraqi air raids on Shushtar, where she was living at the time.

“Those two, three years, it was just constant, they wouldn’t leave us alone, and all you wanted was just some peace, you just wanted it to end.”

She discusses the unique and profound effect that living through the conflict with her family provided.

“You begin to feel that ‘All I want to do is live. All I want to do is be able to go back to my regular life, I don’t care what it is.’”

“You just get to – ‘Well, I’m alive. And that’s all that matters.”

Kit Seddighzadeh was interviewed by her daughter Fetaine at the Storycorps Mobile Booth on March 16th, 2016.
