Wurstfest Opens In New Braunfels

More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the 10-day 58th annual Wurstfest in New Braunfels, according to past Wurstfest President Dan Krueger.

The celebration of German heritage opens Friday and runs through Nov. 11 on the Wurstfest grounds next to Landa Park.

The event includes dozens of booths, featuring German foods such as sausage and sauerkraut, and German, Texas, and domestic beers. Other events include a carnival and live music tents.

A ceremonial sausage bite opened the gates to visitors.

“Everybody gets their sausage; we bite it and we now officially declare that Wurstfest is open," Krueger said.

Many visitors wear the traditional lederhosen, Bavarian-style leather shorts for men, or the dirndl, a Bavarian-style dress for women.

Krueger said new this year are expanded grounds, which includes a mini-golf course.

Tickets can be purchased at the gates or online.Admission is $15. Parking fees vary. There is also a park-and-ride service from Schlitterbahn and the Comal County Fairgrounds, where parking is free.

Wurstfest hours are from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays; from 11 a.m. to 1o p.m. Sundays; 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
