What You Need To Know For Memorial Day In San Antonio

Here's news you can use for Memorial Day 2019.

Closures

San Antonio City Hall and most municipal offices will close Monday to observe Memorial Day.

Recycling, organics recycling and garbage will be collected as usual Monday. The Bitters and Nelson Gardens brush recycling centers will also be open Monday.

Visitors to downtown on Memorial Day will enjoy a parking meter holiday. The Heritage, Lady Bird Johnson, Southside Lions and Woodlawn swimming pools will be open through Monday.

Ceremony

A Memorial Day event will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Monday, May 27.

Music begins at 9 a.m. and the ceremony follows at 9:30 on the west side of the cemetery.  Parking is limited, and long delays are expected entering the cemetery. The public is encouraged to bring chairs.

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Evan Renz will be the keynote speaker. He served 33 years and is now the Associate Chief of Staff for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.

Transit

VIA Metropolitan Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule on Memorial Day.

The downtown information center will operate Monday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and other information centers will close.

Safety

The Texas Department of Public Safety is joining law enforcement efforts across the state to help keep Texas roadways safe and encourage motorists to practice safe driving habits.

DPS Troopers will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers, as well as drivers violating speed limit, seat belt and other traffic laws.

During the 2018 Memorial Day holiday weekend, DPS Troopers issued nearly 65,000 citations and warnings.  DPS enforcement efforts also resulted in 391 DWI arrests.
