Weekend San Antonio Chamber Choir Performances Mark A Big Change

They’re called the San Antonio Chamber Choir, and they're about to go through a major change. But first, Founding Artistic Director Scott MacPherson describes the choir this way.

“ A professional choir of 24 to 32 singers here in San Antonio. We’re in our ninth season. It’s made up of singers from the greater San Antonio and Austin area,” MacPherson said.

As to what's happening, MacPherson said they have not one, but two performances this weekend.

“One in Boerne at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday night at 7:30, and then Sunday, at 3 p.m. at St. Marks Episcopal Church. We have an amazing program of wonderful pieces that we all love,” MacPherson said.

The big transition mentioned at the top? This is MacPherson’s swan song at the helm, and as he explains, they’ve found someone to take his place.

“San Antonio Chamber Choir couldn’t have done better than in finding Rick Bjella as their new artistic director," he said. "His collegiate career in conducting choruses has been outstanding. It’s one of the most stellar careers out there.”

Bjella teaches in Lubbock.

“Which makes him a lot closer to San Antonio than I have been lately. I wouldn’t be stepping down from this group because I love it so much if I still lived here in San Antonio," MacPherson said.

MacPherson lives in Kent, Ohio and has been commuting to San Antonio for choir performances. About Bjella, he’s optimistic.

“I think he’ll take the group in new direction, and he’ll find ways to make it better than it’s ever been,” MacPherson said.
