Texas music legend Rita Vidaurri, also known as La Calandria, died Jan. 16. She was 94.
On this episode, we listen to a 2004 interview between TPR contributor Yvette Benavides and Vidaurri, who, at 80, was enjoying a second career on stage.
Vidaurri was 14 when she was discovered singing at San Antonio's Teatro National by Mario Moreno, who was also known as Cantinflas.
Through the 1940s and 1950s, Vidaurri was a popular singer of the traditional Mexican style of music called rancheras. In her discussion with Benavides, Vidurri discusses her life as well as her tragic losses.
