Symphony's Fiesta Pops Celebrates Spring

Fiesta is transforming the city right now, and it's even transforming what the San Antonio Symphony is up to.   That's because the San Antonio Symphony has a decidedly different sound every spring.

"Fiesta Pops is our annual event during Fiesta."

Akiko Fujimoto will be conducting the Symphony, and she says this performance will feature several sing-alongs.

"The whole point is that we want to involve the audience," she says.

The Fiesta Pops performance allows the symphony to really stretch in different musical directions.

"It's really fun. We have just a blast every year, and a lot of that is due to our friends in Mariachi Campanas and the Guadalupe Dance Company.  It's really exhilarating to play together."

The players from the Mariachi Campanas de America and the Guadalupe Dance Company give the performances a distinctly San Antonio groove.

"They have the most wonderful, colorful costumes, and great shoes!" she laughed. "We also have a new young, featured guest artist this year, who is this young lady named Isabel Maria Sanchez.  I'm wondering if she's the next big superstar in Tejano music."

Fiesta Pops is at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday at the Tobin, then at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

"We're really excited. It's something we look forward to every year."
