Summer Special: SA Parks & Recreation To Offer Free Swimming Lessons

Jody Castro

You might have always wanted to get into the water and laze in the summer’s heat. Or wanted to make sure your children knew how to swim but couldn’t afford the lessons. Well, here’s the chance for some summer cheer for San Antonio residents.

Beginning next month (June), the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department will offer free group swimming lessons at 23 outdoor pools to children 4 and older, and adults, on a first come first served basis, post registration.

You have to drop in and register in person for the program, called VIVA SWIM For Life, at any of several locations [the full list of locations is available here] on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Spots are expected to fill up quickly, but if you can’t make it on May 16, you could still take a chance on there being open spots and contact the San Antonio Natatorium at 207-3299 to find out which pools still have openings.

The lessons are being made available because of a partnership with the San Antonio Sports Foundation and other sponsors. “Swimming is one of those skills that is not only fun and healthy but can save lives," says Director Xavier Urrutia.  “We are thankful for the opportunity to partner with the University Health System, the San Antonio Sports Foundation, and their generous donors to offer free swim lessons to our residents through VIVA SWIM For Life.”
