(Update 5:14) SAPD is now confirming that the suspect has surrendered and is in custody.

(Update 3:41 p.m.) SAPD has released the name of the officer who was shot in the head this morning as 34-year-old Aaron Terrazas and he is expected to make a full recovery. Police are still in a standoff with the suspect and streets around the area are still closed.

(Original Post) San Antonio Police are still trying to negotiate with a suspect who shot an officer this morning at the Super 8 Motel at N. St. Mary's and IH-35. Police said the suspect has barricaded himself in the hotel.

SAPD said officers responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 8 a.m. and once approached, the suspect, a man in his 30’s, shot through the door, hitting the officer in the head. The officer is expected to recover.

SAPD Chief William McManus said a nearby off-duty officer was able to render aid.

"There was an off-duty officer who was listening to his police  radio who happened to be nearby,"McManus said. "He came to the scene and he was the one that transported the officer to hospital in the neighborhood once he was evaluated there he was transported to SAMMC."

Several rooms in the motel have been evacuated and SAPD have had very little contact and are uncertain if he is in the room alone.

SWAT teams were called in to negotiate and two nearby schools, Providence High School and Central Catholic have been placed on lockdown.

Several streets in the area of N. St.Marys, Jones and Camden are blocked to traffic.
