The Source: Promotoras And San Antonio

wikicommons

Figuring out the healthcare system is a scary and frustrating experience - even for those who know the it.

And having a personal guide - who understands you and your culture - can make a major difference.

That's what Promotoras do - they are on the front lines of public health in San Antonio. As San Antonio continues to battle health issues like diabetes, obesity, and other chronic issues, language barriers and culture have to be taken seriously.

Community workers and promotoras are a growing portion of the health service industry, expected to grow 13 percent between 2014-2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Getting more people on the ground is a focus of one program at Northwest Vista College.

Guest:

  • Dr Fernando Martinez, director of the Community Health Program at Northwest Vista College
  • Guadalupe Cornejo, promotora
