The Source: Memorial Day - BRAC, The Legislature And The Civilian Conservation Corps

Texas Parks and Wildlife

In the first segment:

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) is looking at another round of real estate adjustments. In the past, BRAC closed San Antonio’s Kelly Air Force Base but it has also expanded the military’s medical operations in the Alamo City.

San Antonio Congressman Joaquín Castro is leading an effort to protect the city’s military assets from future possible cuts.

In the second segment:

We are hours away from the conclusion of the 83rd Legislature in Austin and there is little doubt that a special session will be called for this summer.

To get an update on the last hours of the legislative session and to recap the high and low lights of the 83th – Ryan Poppe, TPR’s state capitol correspondent is on the line.

In the third segment:

From Palo Duro Canyon in the Panhandle to Lake Corpus Christi on the coast, from Balmorhea in far West Texas to Caddo Lake near the Louisiana border, the state parks of Texas are home to breathtaking natural beauty as well as historic buildings and other structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s.

In "Texas State Parks and the CCC: The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps," Cynthia Brandimarte has written a rich history about how this New Deal program left an indelible stamp on many of the Texas State parks.
