The Source: Julián Castro On Affordable Housing And His Legacy In San Antonio

Ryan Poppe

Texas Public Radio

Julián Castro has been running the U.S. department of Housing and Urban Development for nine months. In that time he has shepherded millions of dollars to communities for a variety of issues. One of the biggest issues in the nation he says is the tightening of credit standards for people seeking home loans as well as access to affordable housing.

How can communities improve the inner city while maintaining the character and longtime residents of neighborhoods?

While he looks for solutions to affordable housing nationwide, some big reactions in Texas to some of his mayoral policies are playing out right now. The state is adopting a pre-kindergarten strategy, highlighting one of Castro's great successes. Meanwhile, the city of San Antonio may make streetcar even less of a reality, highlighting the big changes that have occurred locally since he departed for Washington DC.

Streetcar, council pay, and a mayoral election, what does Castro think of the May ballot?

Guest:

  • Julián Castro, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, former Mayor of San Antonio
