San Antonio’s SOLI Chamber Ensemble is about to begin its new season and violinist Ertan Torgul said their selections will include what he calls "classics of today" -- selections of such quality that time will eventually render them classics.
"We’re always very innovative," he said. "We do a lot of multimedia and we do a lot of mixed ensemble things, and brand new pieces of course. Every season features at least four or five brand new works."
The group, which is celebrating their 20th anniversary this season, beings the autumn performances with a look back at their history.
“On Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15, our program will be called 'Past' and that will focus on SOLI’s beginnings," Torgul said.
Their first selection will be the often-requested Olivier Messiaen’s "Quartet for the End of Time."
"And the history behind that piece, of course, is tremendous," Torgul said. "It was written in a prisoner of war camp."
That will be followed by a composition by San Antonio native Robert Xavier Rodriguez.
"The piece has a very sultry and sexy rumba rhythm that runs through it," Torgul said. "The third work is by composer Paul Moravec."
The SOLI Chamber Ensemble's first season performance is next Monday at Gallery Nord.
