San Antonio Scientists Take On Drug-Resistant Malaria

Certain species of mosquitoes of the Anopheles genus transmit malaria.

We don’t think much about malaria in the United States, but worldwide, the parasite transmitted by mosquitoes infects more than 200 million people.

Timothy Anderson, Ph.D., is a Texas Biomedical Research Institute parasitologist who works on malaria and schistosomiasis.

San Antonio’sTexas Biomedical Research Institute has been awarded a grant of more than 11 million dollars from the National Institutes of Health to study drug resistance in the malaria parasite.  

Tim Anderson,Ph.D., of Texas Biomed is teaming up with scientists at the University of Notre Dame and the Center for Infectious Disease Research in Seattle.

More than 400-thousand people around the world die from malaria each year, but that’s actually an improvement.

Malaria death have dropped by more than half since the turn of the century.
