When Harvey hit the Texas coast last Friday, the city of San Antonio became a refuge for evacuees and its residents were ready to lend a hand.
As a lead resource in the community's relief efforts, the San Antonio Food Bank is collecting non-perishable items, unused clothing, food and monetary donations. Volunteers package emergency food boxes, most of which are being delivered by truck to shelters in Houston.
The American Red Cross' response to Harvey includes an online toolto find open shelters, a mental health hotline and a secure way to donate financially. The Greater San Antonio chapter of the Red Cross places volunteers in shelters set up by the City of San Antonio, helping evacuees with medical assistance or connecting them with basics like food, showers and a place to sleep.
