Matisse ends his run at SAMA, but he’s not going away quietly. Rather than let him just slink away, they're throwing a goodbye party.
“The evening is entitled 'au revoir, Matisse,' ” said Ruth Moreland, music director of the Copperleaf Quintet. "And there’ll be all kinds of wonderful things going on at the museum, and Copperleaf will be performing a concert of French salon music in the third floor exhibition gallery, which is where they have all of Matisse’s art books.”
The Copperleaf Quintet is a vocal chamber ensemble, and on Saturday they will be singing music from the era.
“Matisse loved music, so he probably heard these very pieces," Moreland said.
It all happens as the swan song of the exhibit, this Saturday starting at 7 p.m.
“It’s really a wonderful combination of the visual arts, the musical arts, and it kind of takes you back to that wonderful era in France,” Moreland said.
Attendees can preorder a French-styled meal, dining and drinking in the sculpture garden. They’re even screening Woody Allen’s "Midnight in Paris" at 9 p.m.
“There’s all kinds of things they can do for the evening, so it’s going to be a gala; wonderful evening,” Moreland said.
I kidded with Moreland about seeing that you can actually wear white to this event, even after Labor Day. She laughed.
“I guess in Texas you can, absolutely!” she said.
