SA On Verge Of Scoring Goal With MLS

The City of San Antonio and Bexar County are entering into an $18 million agreement to purchase Toyota Field in hopes of securing a Major League Soccer franchise.

Toyota Field is the soccer stadium currently owned by Gordon Hartman and where the San Antonio Scorpions play as a minor league team. The stadium would require voter-approved upgrades before being ready for an MLS team.

Spurs Sports and Entertainment is also entering into this deal with the promise that they would secure a soccer team within 6 to 13 years.  If they’re not able to do that, they would owe the City and County about $2.5 million each.

It could be a challenge because Major League Soccer has already identified the four new cities that would be expanding over the next two years.  That means the soonest it could possibly happen for San Antonio would be in 2019.

San Antonio City Council and Bexar County Commissioners Court will vote on the purchase of the stadium within the next month.
