Gina Ortiz Jones, the Democrat challenging Republican incumbent Will Hurd in Texas’ Congressional District 23, says election results are too close to call, and the paper-thin vote margin should lead to a total recount.
On Wednesday morning, Hurd led Ortiz Jones by 689 votes, with all precincts counted. But while totals initially showed Jones defeating Hurd, those results flipped in Hurd’s favor because of a reporting mistake in Medina County.
By the early morning, results showed Hurd winning with less than 1 percent of the total district’s electorate.
Gilberto Hinojosa, chair for the Texas Democratic Party, said the circumstances appear to warrant a re-tally of the votes.
“In this case, when you’ re only looking at 600 votes, she will probably be asking for a recount,” he said.
The Texas secretary of state's office says candidates can request a recount after counties finalize the count on all mail-in and provisional ballots, which usually doesn't occur until the end of the month.
