Three years after purchasing a former Albertson’s grocery building, the City of New Braunfels is moving into its new City Hall facility on Monday.
New Braunfels spent more than $2.6 million to acquire the vacant Albertson’s store, at 550 Landa St., and another $9 million to design and remodel the building.
At nearly 62,000 square feet, the facility is almost four times the size of the previous City Hall. It includes such things as a “one-stop shop” adjacent to its lobby, for those seeking building permits or other city services, to make customer service more efficient and allowing residents to visit one building for most city services.
New Braunfels City Council chambers will be much larger, allowing more residents to attend and participate in public meetings. The Tejas meeting room adjacent to the front lobby will also accommodate overflow attendance with a 135-seat capacity, that features TV monitors broadcasting the activities in council chambers.
The City Hall, at 424 South Castell, closed on Sept. 22 and the new facility will open at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26. “While we will be open for business at that time, the formal grand opening ceremony and public tours of the new facility are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, prior to the first scheduled City Council meeting in the new facility,” said City Manager Robert Camareno.
He added “This is the peoples’ building and will be a reflection of the professionalism and quality image that represents New Braunfels. I believe it will be a source of pride for our community. We repurposed a vacant structure, built it economically and brought it in ahead of schedule, under budget and without a tax rate increase – all reflecting the conservative nature and ideals of our community.”
