Navistar, a truck manufacturer, started construction on July 1 of its $250 million truck plant on the South Side. Company officials said the facility was scheduled to open in the spring of 2022 and may bring 600 jobs to the San Antonio area.
The site for the new 900,000-square-foot plant is located near I-35 and 281 and the frontage road connecting to Mitchell Lake Trailhead.
The facility will be capable of building both diesel and fully electric vehicles. The first vehicle off the line will be an electric truck, entirely built on the main assembly line, according to a third quarter report from the company.
The facility will include a general assembly line, body shop, paint shop and logistics center, and a truck specialty center to make aftermarket modifications on-site.
The company is based in Lisle, Illinois. It is best known for its International truck brand.
Navistar International Corporation on Sept. 9 announced a third quarter 2020 net loss of $37 million, compared to third quarter 2019 net income of $156 million.
Revenues in the quarter were $1.7 billion, down 45% from third quarter 2019, a decrease primarily because of COVID-19.
"Our fiscal third quarter opened during the middle of many stay-at-home orders and ended with sections of the economy beginning to reopen, and our results certainly reflect this," said Persio Lisboa, president and chief executive officer.
"As a result of the pandemic, we had the opportunity to revisit our investment portfolio and retime noncritical programs, and cancel others," Lisboa explained. "By streamlining our investments, we were able to free up significant capacity, which is being redeployed into advanced technology programs and strategic partnerships that accelerate our pace of progress."
Navistar International Corporation is a holding company whose subsidiaries and affiliates produce the International brand of commercial trucks, proprietary diesel engines, and the IC Bus brand school and commercial buses.
One affiliate also provides truck and diesel engine service parts. Another offers financing services.
