Local Duo Demitasse Orchestrates Fun Project With Youth Orchestra

Jun 30, 2020

In a time when live musical performances are hard to come by, one San Antonio band has figured out a way to keep the music going.

Grammy-winning guitarist, singer and producer Joe Reyes and his musical partner Erik Sanden are popular for their art-rock band Buttercup. But more recently Reyes and Sanden have angled towards a more acoustic sound with their two-piece Demitasse.

The two have worked with Troy Peters and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio on several projects, including Peters’ yearly Classic Albums Live. events at the Tobin Center.

"Yeah, we've been really lucky ever since we started working with Troy," he said.

With live performance out of the question right now, Peters asked Sanden and Reyes to give him a song that he could put the YOSA kids to work on.

"At some point Troy reached out to us and asked us for this collaboration,” he said. “I was like, Ooh!"

So Demitasse gave Peters the song “Coming Out Wrong Again.” This is a song they recorded on last fall’s Perfect Life album.

In the video, YOSA musicians accompany the duo with violins and cellos.

"Yeah! When they enter, man it's just lush, so beautiful,” Reyes said. “I was very pleased. Absolutely."

Peters edited that zoom-style video, showing Sanden, Reyes and the YOSA kids throughout. Might there be other collaborations?

"Oh, hopefully, yeah. It would be great to continue working with those guys," Reyes said.

We will keep you posted.
