'Live At Jazz, TX' Returns For A Second Season On TPR

This summer, we’re back at it with another season of jazz and blues from the heart of the Pearl Brewery. “Live At Jazz, TX” brings you hot sets from regional and national talent like Marcia Ball, Herlin Riley, and San Antonio’s own Doc Watkins, owner and proprietor of the titular club.

The first episode features Doc Watkins in a trio setting with bassist Mike Porter and drummer Brandon Guerra, and the swing is in full effect. As Watkins says, the three get along so well because they know when to bring the energy, and when to relax.

“We spend time out in the country, on road trips, doing gigs and stuff like that… and we'll pull over and just kind of walk around and just goof off and stuff. But when it's show time, they're also ready to bring the energy. “

Watkins continues, “We've never had to really talk about what kind of personality we want to be as a group because we just do our thing, and everybody just kind of knows what we're doing… and I never had to tell them what we were doing! We all just kind of figured it out together. And I think I think that's very rare. So I'm blessed.”

Hear the Doc Watkins Trio take on “Bags' Groove,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Syndrome” and “Canadian Sunset” among other standards in this edition of “Live At Jazz, TX.” Tune in Saturday nights at 7:00 on Texas Public Radio, or listen online in the SoundCloud link below. The program will be broadcast for sixteen weeks, beginning June 9, 2018.
