The Playhouse San Antonio is taking on "Les Miserables," a production on the largest of scales.
"'Les Mis' is obviously the most epic musical ever, and this is one of those musicals where every actor, every designer, every director has wanted to do their whole lives," said Playhouse CEO Asia Ciaravino.
Set in the first half of 1800s France, this production has connected with audiences for decades because of its evergreen human themes.
"It’s a story about redemption and revolution," Ciaravino said. "It’s an amazing story that I feel everyone needs to see. It’s that gripping, it’s that incredible."
There’s no small challenge in putting on such a large production.
"The set is immense -- there are over three hundred costumes -- we have 47 cast persons onstage, we have twenty five crew people -- it’s just an enormous undertaking," Ciaravino said. "There’s no other show that’s as big as 'Les Mis.'"
Being a musical, all of the music in The Playhouse's production will be produced live.
"We have eleven orchestra members that play the music in the pit," Ciaravino said. "This show is sung from start to finish. It’s almost two hours and forty minutes of singing nonstop. So these actors have chops."
"Les Miserable" is running at The Playhouse until November 3.
