There are few actions that suggest a run for higher office — like the presidency — as strongly as making speeches at the Iowa State Fair, which is where San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will be this weekend.
Castro, who also served as the secretary of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration, is scheduled to appear at several events in Iowa this weekend. He said he'll spend some of his visit campaigning for Democrats running in Iowa’s general election.
“And second, it’s no secret that I’m thinking about running in 2020. This will be my first time in Iowa, and I look forward to hearing what people are talking about and getting a sense of the state,” Castro said.
Along with his stump speeches for Democratic candidates, Castro will also speak at the Old Fashioned Political Soapbox, a tradition in Des Moines.
Iowa is one of the first states to hold caucuses ahead of a presidential election, which offer an early picture about which candidates are doing better among likely primary voters.
New Hampshire is the state that hosts the country’s first presidential primary election every four years, a state Castro has already visited twice this year.
Castro said he will make a definitive announcement on whether or not he is running for president in 2020 before the end of this year.
