A local singing ensemble has an artful and interesting way of doing what they do. They're the The Copperleaf Quintet and they perform vocal chamber music in stunning settings.
"We gave two gallery concerts at the San Antonio Museum of Art," said Copperleaf Quintet’s Executive Director Ruth Moreland.
This Tuesday night, March 4, they’ll be singing in a small gallery named in honor of the priest who established Mission San Jose. Moreland detailed he music they’ll be singing:
"A collection of villanescas, which are these Renaissance, Spanish, very lively, rhythmic pieces that were written by Francisco Guerrero" Moreland said.
Copperleaf is also performing next Tuesday, March 11, and both shows start at 6:30 p.m. If you’re wondering whether or not you can afford it, she's got good news.
“It’s free night at the museum, so people can just come by and wander around and look at the art and hear this great music," Moreland said.
I asked Moreland if that kind of music in that kind of setting was, in a sense, a kind of meditation.
“Absolutely, that’s what it is," she said. "It’s just this wonderful opportunity to meditate. It’s very reflective, it’s very contemplative. And of course in that beautiful place it’s visually awe inspiring, and the acoustics there are astounding."
Copperleaf is also singing this year as artists in residence at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word at UIW. They're performing at UIW next week.
"On Sunday, the ninth of March, we will be doing a concert of reflective music for lent," Moreland said. "It’s vocal chamber music -- five singers, five parts. So it’s a time to come and have an hour of reflection at the early part of lent."
