Downtown San Antonio is now a federal historic district, including the River Walk and about 200 buildings in the area.
The city spent $45,000on the application for an official designation in the National Register of Historic Places, but will get a return on investment in the millions for property owners collectively in the district.
Historic properties are protected on the state and federal level, and may be eligible for tax credits that could cover up to 45 percentof renovation-related expenses.
What will the designation mean for the preservation of architecture and design in San Antonio? Will incentives encourage local restoration projects or prompt questions about downtown investment?
What buildings and historical sites do you want to see restored in San Antonio's urban core?
Guests:
- Shanon Miller, director of the Office of Historic Preservation for the City of San Antonio
- Gregory Smith, National Register coordinator for the Texas Historical Commission
- Vincent Michael, executive director of the San Antonio Conservation Society
