HHS Secretary Talks Affordable Care Act At Trinity University

U.S. Government

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will be visiting the Alamo City this week, joining the City of San Antonio to provide more information about the Affordable Care Act.

Sebelius will speak Thursday evening when Trinity University and the Metropolitan Health District host a public event to offer information about the new health care act, much of which takes effect in the next year.

The city previously hosted Sebelius when it unveiled the Por Vida Health Campaign, an ongoing city-wide marketing campaign to get restaurants to offer healthy choices.

The secretary has traveled extensively promoting a variety of programs, but the new health plan has created the most questions from all types of consumers, from small business owners to individual health care consumers.

Several presenters will join Sebelius at the event. Dr. Robert Morrow of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is expected to introduce information about the health insurance exchange.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry last month notified the federal government that Texas will not implement a state-run health insurance exchange, so the federal government will run the program in the state.

The panel, which also includes Metro Health Director Dr. Robert Schlenker, Courtney Watson of the Children’s Defense Fund, and Anne Dunkelberg with the Center for Public Policy Priorities, is expected to discuss effects on small business owners, consumers and health care providers.

The event is free and is sponsored by the City of San Antonio. It starts at 6 p.m. at Trinity’s Stieren Theater.
