Health Disparities in Bexar County

Moving Toward A Healthy Community: Health Disparities and Mending the Gap in Bexar County. This Conversation About Ethics panel presentation features representatives from five stakeholder groups: community, for-profit healthcare, non-profit healthcare, academia, and government, in a discussion about health disparities in Bexar County. The discussion explores unfilled health care needs as well as root causes that contribute to inequalities (including poverty, underinsurance, low health literacy, language, cultural factors and transportation), which in turn lead to poor health.
 
This event took place on October 10, 2012 at the UT Health Science Center Holly Auditorium.

The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics, part of the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center, sparks empathy and compassion in the next generation of doctors, nurses and other health professionals who will soon serve communities in San Antonio and beyond. The Center was founded in 2002 by noted physician-author Abraham Verghese, M.D., who served as its first director. He was succeeded in 2007 by Ruth Berggren, M.D. Today, the Center leads programs in ethics and professionalism, literature and art, global health and community service learning in its efforts to shape community-connected healers for San Antonio, South Texas and the world.
