Ian Andrew Barton was born at 1:19 a.m. Thursday to Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales.

District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales has given birth to a baby boy.

Ian Andrew Barton was born at 1:19 a.m. Thursday, weighing 4 pounds 9 ounces and is 19 inches long.

Mayor Julián Castro and City Clerk Leticia Vacek offered a congratulations to Gonzales and her husband, Kevin, at Thursday's council meeting.

In a statement, Castro said:

"The San Antonio City Council sends heartfelt congratulatory greetings to our colleague, Shirley and her husband Kevin on the birth of her son Ian. We are equally proud to have the first sitting Council member give birth to a baby!"

He also noted Gonzales has the option of using technology to stay up to date on council happenings by Skyping in to council meetings, if need be.

Gonzales' staff says the new mother should be back to work representing her district soon. Spokesperson Choco Meza said she only expects Gonzales to miss this week's council meeting.
