John Moore is a special correspondent and staff photographer with Getty Images. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Moore has won numerous awards, including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography, and photographer of the year from Pictures of the Year International. Moore spent 10 years covering the U.S.-Mexico border, and compiled a number of those photographs in his book, “Undocumented: Immigration and the Militarization of the United States-Mexico Border.”
Moore covered aa much-publicized caravan in April of Central American migrants traveling through Mexico to the U.S.-Mexico border.
“In this group, most people were women and children, with fathers and husbands as well — family units,” he said.
Moore has observed a change in the types of migrants making their way to the U.S., with a promise of a better life.
“When I first started this project 10 years ago, I was photographing mostly single individuals: men, sometimes women, coming up seeking work,” he said. “Over time, there have been more families seeking political asylum.”
Moore said the influx of families seeking asylum is primarily due to the levels of violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
