12-Year-Old Mailani Godin

A 12-year-old Eisenhower Middle School girl is dead after being hit by a car on West Avenue Thursday morning. Just before 7 a.m, Mailani Godin was struck by a Toyota Prius while crossing the street at Larkspur Drive.

The driver had the green light and stopped to render aid. Godin died at the scene of the accident.

During Thursday’s Council meeting, District 10 Councilman Joe Krier asked for a moment of silence. The accident happened in his district. After visiting the cross streets midday Thursday, Krier said he is calling for an investigation.

“I have asked [SAPD] Chief McManus and I’m going to ask the head of the city’s traffic department to do a complete investigation of this accident and to recommend to me what, if anything, they think can or should be done to make that particular crossing safer,” Krier said.

Two years ago, another young girl, 9-year-old Tatyana Babineaux, was killed less than a mile away on the same street by a hit-and-run driver. Krier plans to meet with Brian Gottardy, the superintendent of the Northeast Independent School District next week. The district dispatched counselors to the school Thursday morning.
