An upcoming Mariachi performance will celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day.

Cynthia Muñoz is producing the event, and she gives high praise to its headliner.

“One of the greatest Mariachi vocalists living and touring," she said.

She's spoke about Steeven Sandoval, who will perform Saturday, May 4, at the Charline McCombs Empire Theater.

"Most people here in San Antonio will remember Steeven as the former primera voz or the lead singer of the world renowned and Mexico City based mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlá," she said.

This is the third consecutive year Sandoval has visited around this time.

"People who see him once want to come back and see him again and again and again," Muñoz said.

Nathania Flores will join Sandoval.

"Opening for Steeven is a young artist who was named Grand Champion vocalist from the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in November. This young lady is 16 years old,” she said.

“And accompanying both Steeven and Nathania will be San Antonio's very own Mariachi Azteca de America. They are two time Grand Champion Winners of the Houston Livestock and Rodeo."

She stresses this concert isn't just for those raised on Mariachi.

"You can understand so much of what he's singing even if you're not fluent in Spanish," Muñoz said.

She said that like opera, the theatrics almost tip you off to what's going on.
