San Antonio Congressman Joaquín Castro has asked for a full report on Air Force commanders’ recommendations regarding sexual misconduct in the Air Force.
On Wednesday the congressman asked fellow Armed Services Committee members to support his amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.
With 32 boot camp instructors under investigation for the abuse of almost 60 victims, the investigation is the largest in the history of the Air Force.
Castro emphasized to the House Armed Services Committee that his amendment would provide accountability that the 46 recommendations made by the Command Investigation last year have been effective at stopping sexual misconduct.
He said the issue is of critical importance to San Antonio in particular, but also across all communities in the country.
"Just yesterday San Antonio was ranked as the friendliest city to the military," Castro said. "We’ve got three military bases there now. We used to have five. So you can imagine that the community there as our community across the United States has been appalled at what has happened in the Air Force and at Lackland Air Force Base."
The amendment also calls for the Government Accountability Office to assess best practices that can be shared across all branches of the military and for the report to be completed by April 1, 2014.
