Thousands of people showed up at the MAC launch Friday in Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s hometown of Corpus Christi. The company launched the collection online Saturday—but sold out by the end of the day, thanks to the overwhelming excitement of Selena fans.
Selena had always wanted her own makeup line, says sister Suzette Quintanilla.
She was actually working on a line when she was taken from us, so it means so much to me as her sister to finally see that dream come true even though she’s no longer here,” Quintanilla says.
It means a lot to countless fans, too.
“Not only is it her music that we can continue to enjoy, but we was fans can feel like we have a part of her legacy with us on a daily basis,” says Priscilla Reyna of San Antonio.
Reyna says Selena was her childhood idol, because Selena looked like and represented her as a Mexican-American. Reyna says a makeup line is a fitting tribute to a singer who was also a Latina fashion icon.
“I think makeup provides women with confidence and sets the mood for our day,” says Reyna. “With a reminder of her on the label, it is as if we can channel her beauty into our everyday routine.”
Reyna plans to visit a MAC Cosmetics store this week and take home some products named for the Grammy winner’s hits. Like a deep red ‘Amor Prohibido’ lipstick, ‘Missing My Baby’ eye shadow and a pink-hued ‘Bidi Bidi Bom Bom’ gloss.
The Selena Collection came to be because Selena fans petitioned the company online beginning last year.
"Selena's talent and beauty, inside and out have left a colorful, meaningful impact in the world that has continued to grow over the last two decades,” says MAC creative director James Gager. We have heard the passion and enthusiasm from her fans and wholeheartedly agree that her legacy embodies MAC's philosophy.”
The Selena line goes on sale in South Texas stores on Thursday.
