At the front of the Express-New newsroom sit a simple memorial to Craig Thomason, a much loved and respected former city editor.

A long-time city editor of the San Antonio Express-News, affectionately known as "Uncle Craig" to many of the reporters he hired, has died after an injury he suffered last week.

Former Metro Editor, Craig Thomason is remembered by Kym Fox, an associate professor at Texas State University's journalism school, as "the consummate journalist."

Fox said in the Express-News on Friday that Thomason helped "shape the journalism and the journalists of this town for 25 years."

Others memorialized him as the ultimate team player, and one who embraced diversity. He is quoted as saying, "Never underestimate the heart of San Antonio."

Thomason was 65. Services are scheduled for Wednesday. The Express-News obituary can be found here.
