A San Antonio attorney has pled guilty to charges of bribing a state district criminal court judge.
Criminal defense attorney Alberto Acevedo, Jr., pled guilty in federal court Monday to improperly influencing a Texas State Court Judge. According to reports, Acevedo was charged with bribing Judge Angus McGinty by giving him cash, paying for repairs on the judge’s personal vehicle, and arranging the sale of a vehicle belonging to the judge.
In his plea agreement, the 60-year-old Acevedo admitted giving gifts, payments and other things of value totaling more than $6,655 to the state court judge in exchange for favorable judicial rulings that benefit him and his clients, including lenient sentences and less restrictive conditions of release for clients.
Acevedo faces a maximum 10 year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. He was released on bond pending a sentencing hearing, which has not been set.
McGinty resigned his seat on the bench of the 144th State District Court in February after reports of the investigation surfaced. The U.S. attorney’s office declined comment due to the continuing investigation.
