Texas House Candidate From El Paso Says She Was Attacked Outside Her Home

El Paso Democrat Lyda Ness-Garcia, who is challenging state Rep. Marissa Márquez for her seat in the Texas House, told police she was attacked outside her home by two people.

Ness-Garcia said the attackers told her, "You better hope you don't win" and threatened her family's safety.

In a statement, Ness-Garcia writes:

“The attackers made clear that their motives were political, but because this is an active law enforcement matter, I will not go in to further details as to the nature of the attack.”

Ness-Garcia was treated for bruises and released from a minor-emergency clinic. The Texas Rangers, along with the El Paso Police Department, are investigating the matter.

Marquez also released a statement:

"I'm sorry this happened to her and her family.  This has no place in politics and I hope the investigation unfolds quickly. I'm sure I echo the sentiments of all candidates when I say that we stand ready to assist in any way possible."
