A group of nonprofits and healthcare advocates are holding a large statewide outreach and education program with a goal of getting Texans signed up in the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

The Texas Organizing Project is holding a weekly event that kicks off this week in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

"We really talk about what are the benefits of the affordable care act, what options they have, what options their family might have, is there financial assistance, and a little bit of health insurance 101," said Tiffany Hogue with the Texas Organizing Project.

Hogue said they will have navigators on hand to walk people through the process. She said misconceptions about the marketplace and the law have been one of their biggest challenges.

"The primary obstacle that we have is all the misinformation out there," Hogue said. "If someone knows something about the Affordable Care Act, they probably know something that is wrong."

Hogue said a lot of this misinformation has been purposefully created by those against the new health law.

"That’s the politicized nature of everything surrounding the Affordable Care Act and frankly I think we need to ask ourselves: Do we want people to have access to healthcare?" Hogue said.

Hogue said the Texas Organizing Project will be holding their weekly Affordable Care Act education event every Thursday from now until the last enrollment date at the end of March.
