David Lesch is the Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor Middle East History at Trinity University. He has written 14 books, two of them on Syria's president Bashar al'Assad.
It was his interest in the country and its leadership that would get his passport seized and an extended visit to a dank windowless room at Damascus International Airport.
