Stakeholders of center city development got together today to talk about balancing the needs of young urban professionals with growing families as the revitalization of downtown moves forward.
About 200 members of the Urban Land Institute heard different perspectives from school officials, business partners and real estate gurus about the development of downtown for family residences.
A focus group of real estate agents revealed that many don’t think of showing downtown homes to their clients with families.
Developer David Adelman wants the industry to get better information about the quality of the schools in the area.
"Particularly to let our real estate development community know what's going on and to encourage and inspire more developers to come and look in the center city - and to develop projects that are probably more targeting for families with young kids," he said.
Dr. Sylvester Perez, superintendent of San Antonio ISD, said that if more families knew what was going on in his district, they would be eager to move to the center of town.
"SAISD has more school choice than any public school district, I think, in America. We have internal charter schools, we have magnet programs that offer special courses, and we also are the only school district in Bexar County that can say we have a blue ribbon high school, which is Fox Tech," Perez said.
Developer Ed Cross also told the ULI membership there’s a need for more quality urban housing for families.
