Should voters choose their representatives or should representatives choose their voters? The League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWVCA) invites the public to join an online meeting January 20, 2021, to discuss how legislative districts are drawn in our state and steps we can take to ensure that the public is part of the process. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20 on Zoom (ID: 899 8656 3219 password: 270440) and a live-stream on Facebook. The meeting will be recorded for later viewing on the LWVCA YouTube channel LWV Comal Area. Fair Maps Texas spokesperson and LWV of Texas Redistricting Issue Chair Stephanie Swanson will provide updates on the latest court cases, the Texas 87th Legislative Session and the potential impact on local legislative districts. “Our goal is to help people understand the importance of the redistricting process and provide information on what actions they can take. Our electoral system is founded on the principle that every American has the right to equal representation and is guaranteed the freedom to choose their own elected officials. Politicians who manipulate district lines to keep their own political party in power do not hurt just those from opposing political parties. These politicians hurt all voters by taking away voters' ability to choose their own leaders and hold legislators accountable. We are advocating for a nonpartisan, open and fair process to ensure equitable representation,” explains LWVCA Program Director Daphne Spraitzar.
