SXSW 2013: San Antonio High School Students Showcase

Repeat visits are in store this year for two San Antonio high schools at the South By Southwest Film Festival.  You'll have an opportunity to show your support at a public screening of these and other Texas High School Shorts on Saturday, March 16, 6 p.m. at Austin's Carver Museum Boyd Vance Theater.

From O’Connor High School, Jonathan Munoz returned to the festival after his film “The Apparition” screened in 2012. Working this time with classmate Kyle Curtis, their short thriller, “Trapped,” is screening as part of the Texas High School Shorts program. “Trapped” is a Möbius Strip-like movie about a man who wakes from a horrible nightmare, only to find himself terrorized by the mysterious Slender Man in the woods.

Munoz and Curtis found shooting at night to be a challenge, not only because of the difficulty of lighting their shots, but also because crew would nod off in the wee hours of the morning. Ultimately, their crew rallied together to produce an accomplished short film full of arresting moments, all in five minutes time.

Hear Jonathan Munoz and Kyle Curtis talk about their film, and plans for the future:

St. Mary’s Hall is also no stranger to the SXSW Film Festival, having had entries in the running for the past four years. For the 2013 festival, an animated film, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” was chosen by the festival for public screening.  The film is innovative in its use of old technology to create something new. 2D paper cutouts make up the majority of the final film, although subtle bursts of color add depth to the figures. Those were created by dying tissue paper and projecting a light source behind the cutouts, according to Katharine Clement, one of the artists that worked on the project.

Hear Aiden Anders (editor), Katharine Clement (art), Callan Harrison (animator/writer), and Ethan Ausburn (art) talk about the making of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.”
