Competing Pianists: 11th San Antonio International Piano Competition Underway

Thursday the field narrowed to eight competitors and will go down to five pianists for the finals at the San Antonio International Piano Competition.

Emily Townsend is the Piano Technician for Trinity University and working closely for the piano competition. During the first round she spoke to host John Clare about her duties, but was interrupted for an issue with an instrument! She returned after having to clean keys for a contestant performing next.  The competition will resume on Saturday, October 20th and a final recital on Sunday, October 21st. Masterclasses, and receptions will also take place Sunday.

The Finals are on Saturday, October 20, at Ruth Taylor Recital Hall. Scheduled will be:

  • 10:00   Finalist #1
  • 11:00   Finalist #2
  • 12:00   Finalist #3
  • 2:00    Finalist #4
  • 3:00    Finalist #5

Winners will be announced after 5 p.m. as well as the announcement of winners of Best Performance of the Commissioned Composition, Best Performance of a 20th or 21st Century work, Best Performance of a Russian work, and the Junior Jury Award.

John Clare is comfortable behind a microphone, streaming video or playing violin. A former broadcaster for NPR, John has previously worked with Voice of America, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation and stations in Kansas, Nevada, California, and Pennsylvania.
