San Antonio's art community lost one of its giants over the weekend. Edith McAllister, who spent much of her life helping push forward the role of art in the city, died on Sunday. She was 100.

Fiesta weekend is upon us, and here are a few ideas about where to go and what to do.

Southwest School of Art

A major art story has happened pretty quietly here in San Antonio. It’s not a theater debut, a Picasso exhibit, or a huge new installation, but what’s happening now should be a major splash in the city’s
artistic future.

"The BFA degree program starts next week with orientation of the students, and they begin their coursework on Monday the 25," said Southwest School of Art's Paula Owen, who is talking about the school’s new BFA degree program.

"This is a natural next step for the Southwest School of Art," she said.

So exactly what is the program?

The Southwest School of Art is putting on their Fiesta Arts Fair this weekend. It all happens under the pecans and crape myrtles in between the limestone buildings and shady walkways that make up the old Ursuline campus downtown.

“This weekend we have what some people say is their very favorite, or their only, Fiesta event, and that’s Fiesta Arts Fair," said Southwest School of Art President Paula Owen.
